Educational Webinar on Modeling Human Diseases In Vitro using Advanced MPS

Posted on: 06/10/2025

The RE-Place Educational Webinars are organized to promote the use and development of New Approach Methodologies by putting the existing Belgian expertise in the spotlight. The webinars are open to all interested parties including scientists, regulators, the authorities and the public and are accredited by the Brussels and Flemish regions.

Program

During this webinar session, Dr. Nanci Santos-Ferreira will present her work on unraveling hepatitis E virus replication in the gut using human intestinal enteroids and a gut-on-chip model. Dr. Nanci Santos-Ferreira holds a bachelor’s degree in Bioanalytical Sciences and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Pathogenesis of RNA Viruses & Therapeutic Options (Porto) Lab at KU Leuven, where her work focuses on using stem cell–derived organoid models and organ-on-chip technology to study enteric virus biology and advance antiviral development.

Then, Eloïse Bouges will give a presentation on patient derived tumoroid to model rectal cancer under radiotherapy in a microphysiological system. Eloïse holds an engineering degree from the Ecole de Biologie Industrielle (France). Her research focuses on developing and refining an in vitro microphysiological model of colorectal cancer using patient-derived tumor organoids. This project aims to investigate the radioprotective mechanisms of biotic food supplements in the context of radiotherapy, with the goal of improving quality of life for cancer patients.
