Posted on: 23/05/2025

The Humane World for Animals (formerly the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International) is accepting nominations for its ‘Humane Science Innovator Award’. The award recognizes a scientist who has made outstanding contributions to the replacement of animals in research and testing.

Selection

Recipients of the Humane Science Innovator Award are selected by a judging panel that includes past award honorees and members of the Humane World for Animals team. Humane World for Animals will bestow the Humane Science Innovator Award at the 13th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences, to be held from 31 Aug. to 4 Sept. 2025, in Rio de Janeiro. The winner will receive $10,000 and a commemorative award.

Application process

Candidates will be judged on the scientific merit of their contributions, their professional commitment to the replacement of animals in research and testing and their related track record in the field. Researchers from academia, government or industry, non-animal method developers or other pioneers in non-animal approaches are encouraged to submit self-nominations or nominate relevant colleagues.

Submissions should include a curriculum vitae and three published articles (preferably in PDF format) that represent the candidate’s work in non-animal science. Applicants should also answer the following questions (max. 200 words per question):

  • How has your/their scientific work directly led to the replacement of animals in research/testing?
  • What additional actions, if any, have you/they taken to replace animals in research and testing (such as policy efforts, bringing together scientists to advance non-animal methods, etc.)?
  • How has your/their work been recognized by peers or within the scientific community?
  • What future directions do you see for your/their research in non-animal methods?

Nominations are due by June 6, 2025. Documents should be sent by e-mail to mhilley@humaneworld.org.
