Introduction

The European Commission is developing a roadmap for phasing out animal testing in chemical safety assessments. You can play an active role by sharing your transitional initiative and contributing to this collective effort. Notify your initiative here!

Context

The European Commission is building a roadmap in response to the European Citizen’s Initiative ‘Save cruelty-free cosmetics - Commit to a Europe without animal testing’. It will provide a guiding plan to accelerate the phasing out animal testing for chemical safety assessment and outline clear milestones and actions to reach this goal. The roadmap aims at expanding and accelerating the development, validation and implementation of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs).

Dynamic Catalogue of initiative

As part of the roadmap, the Commission is establishing a catalogue of ‘transitional initiatives’. These are defined as ‘planned courses of action (including one or more activities, outputs and importantly expected outcomes) that contribute to the phasing out of animal testing in the regulatory assessment of chemicals’. The progress of each initiative will be assessed at a number of checkpoints during the roadmap implementation, with targeted recommendations provided in order to maximise the impact of each initiative.

Notification practicalities

  • Transitional initiatives can be notified by any stakeholders or team of stakeholders (academia, industry, EU agencies, Member States authorities, NGOs).
  • Provided information will be made publicly available.
  • Inclusion of initiatives in the catalogue does not imply formal recognition by the Commission.
  • Notification can be done at any time, during development or implementation of the roadmap.
  • No strict criteria; the initiatives should contribute directly or indirectly to the replacement or reduction of animal use in the safety assessment of chemicals and describe plausible pathways to impact.
  • Notification can be done by completing this form.

Call to action

The Commission invites you to share your initiative(s) and contribute to the roadmap. By participating, you help stimulate discussion, build momentum, and strengthen this collective effort to phase out animal testing in Europe.
